Populárna muzika alebo POP
Populárna hudba v užšom zmysle slova je hudba prevažne 20. a 21. storočia, ktorá na rozdiel od tzv. vážnej hudby je určená širokým masám poslucháčov (ako „spotrebný tovar"). Jej rozmach nastal s rozšírením rozhlasu a gramofónovej techniky, keď už nebolo potrebné, aby bol poslucháč priamo prítomný na koncerte. V širšom ponímaní je to tvorba vznikajúca z napätia medzi hudbou vážnou a hudbou ľudovou. Pop alebo pop-music je hudobný žáner zameraný na pobavenie čo najširšej časti poslucháčov. Popové skladby sa spravidla skladajú zo slôh a refrénov s predvídateľnou štruktúrou. Texty sú nenáročné, opakujúce sa témy. Popové skladby bývajú komponované, nahrávané a vydávané obyčajne s cieľom komerčného úspechu. Časťou ľudí býva pop niekedy odmietaný ako "neumelecký hudobný žáner". Pop ako hudobný štýl vznikol na začiatku 60. rokov 20. storočia po ústupe štýlu rock and roll. Za prvých priekopníkov je možné považovať Beach Boys, Four Seasons a Everly Brothers. Príbuznými odnožami sú poprock a europop. Pop rock Pop rock je hudobný žáner, ktorý je zmesou popu a rocku. Skladby v tomto štýle sa vyznačujú jednoduchými textami sprevádzanými rytmickou gitarovou hudbou. Termín pop rock je niekedy deifnovaný ako osobitný žáner rockovej hudby, inokedy ako žáner patriaci pod pop. Odborníci niekedy zdôrazňujú, že žánre popu a rocku sú protichodné, často argumentujú vtieravosťou popovej hudby a rockový žáner považujú za viacej autentický a rýdzejší druh hudby. Príručka American Popular Music definuje pop rock ako „príťažlivú verziu rockovej hudby, reprzentovanú hudobníkmi ako sú Elton John, Paul McCartney, Rod Stewart, Chicago a Peter Frampton.“ Naproti tomu hudobný kritik George Starostin radí pop rock ako subžáner k popu využívajúceho efekt chytľavých popových songov založených na gitarovom hudobnom sprievode. Argumentuje tým, že pod pop rock spadá väčšina z toho, čo je tradične označované ako power pop. Tvrdí, že lyrická stránka pop rocku má popri hudbe sekundárny význam. Billborad považuje za predstaviteľov pop rocku 70. rokov napríklad okrem iných The Jackson 5, Three Dog Night, Eltona Johna, Dianu Ross, Bee Gees, Fleetwood Mac, Donna Summer, Billy Joela, či Oliviu Newton-John. Encyclopedia Britannica označuje skupinu Bee-Gees za „Anglo-austrálsku pop-rockovú kapelu, ktorá zosobňuje disco éru konca 70. rokov.“ Treba však uznať, že skupina Bee Gees sa v polovici 60. rokov dostala na vrcholy austrálskych rebríčkov ako pop-rocková skupina. 80. roky Z pohľadu Billboardu patria k pop rocku začiatku 80. rokov umelci ako Daryl Hall and John Oates, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Stevie Nicks a Phil Collins. Po skončení nadvlády éry disco Billboard označil ako poprockerov Bryana Adamsa, Cher, Roxette, Billy Oceana, U2, Michaela Jacksona, skupinu Def Leppard. Medzi významných predstaviteľov tohto žánru sa v prvom desaťročí svojej kariéry dostala aj Madonna. Billboard považuje za hudobníkov pop rockového hudobného žánru 90. rokov Ace Of Base, ale aj Robbie Williamsa, Alanis Morissette, Shakiru, Blink 182, No Doubt, Hanson, Gin Blossoms, či dc talk. V tomto období patria medzi pop rockových umelcov Billboardu Kelly Clarkson, Boys Like Girls, The All-American Rejects, The Blackout, Avril Lavigne, Ashlee Simpson, Fall Out Boy, Panic at the Disco, Pink, Metro Station, Weezer, Yellowcard a Flyleaf.
